About our place: Charamon is the name of our little oasis in Abilene, Texas. Since my wife and I are descended from Irish and Scots-Irish, we used an Irish name meaning “Refuge.” We have a very large (for me) vegetable garden which we cultivate using organic practices (you know, compost, mulch, no pesticides, chemical fertilizers, etc).
Who I am: My name is Dwight Whitsett and I am married to Brenda, my high school sweetheart, and I have numerous offspring and grandoffspring. If you want to know all the boring and meaningless details, you can go to my other blog and click on the “about” link there.
My Interests: I enjoy woodcarving and carved professionally for a couple of years. I am a Christian and student of the Bible and apologetics. I also sing when I get a chance (bass/baritone/tenor – if not too high). I think if I had not become a teacher, I would be a farmer. I am very interested in agricultural and water issues (conservation, irrigation, aquifers, rainwater collection, etc.).
I Dislike: partisan politics, the latest gunk on celebrities, arrogance in any form, lying, money-grubbing televangelists, making beds, thoughtlessness, selfishness, undercurrents (want everything “on the table”)

I grew up in Abilene and recently moved back here after college and bought my first house in old elmwood area. I am hoping to get myself in gear and work on this yard(front and back).
It needs some ‘lovin.. to put it nicely lol. I came upon your site somehow and I have enjoyed reading everything on here. In the last 5 mins of reading I actually learned quite alot.
I have not thought about growing anything edible in my back yard but I am always eager to learn so thank you. I think it’s amazing what ya’ll do and it made me laugh with you and smile.
So your lives made mine that much happier today. I wish you luck on your berries and the soil work you did around the trees. I have horrible soil in this yard due to neglect from previous owners and I am currently trying to figure out what grass/sod to put down. Plus I have to get this soil tested.
Tons of shade or tons of sunlight, dirt and weeds..yay!! lol. 1 question: how do you keep the rodents(squirrels) and birds from destroying your plants, etc? I have tons of squirrels here.. thank you God. lol.
Take care and good luck,
Lance Galbraith
